In the North East area of Scotland fingerless knitted mittens are known as Hummel Doddies. Meaning: Hummel (Animal without horns). Local Doric language = without Doddies = Fingers.
According to information from the Island of Yell, Hailing Dags is the name of fingerless knitted mittens from the Shetland Islands. Several generations ago a wife spun the Shetland sheep wool and then knitted fingerless mittens for her husband to use when he went to the haddock line in an open boat and the mittens were used so that they could bait the hooks and take off the fish as they could not manage with ordinary gloves. They were so successful she then knitted them for all the crew. Later the same name was used to market them.
