The Ecos trust, an educational charity, has been offered the chance to restore one of the last surviving (and certainly the best) gloving factory in Yeovil. Yeovil was a gloving centre since at least Tudor times, and from the mid-19th to mid-20th Centuries perhaps the foremost gloving centre in the country.
The factory, currently known as 'Foundry House' after its post-gloving use in the 60s, was built in the 1870s by Ewens and Johnson, passing to Pullmans in 1945.
Two years ago the building was threatened with imminent demolition by the District Council. At the eleventh hour it was spot-listed, Grade 2; it is now being offered to Ecos for restoration. The Trust has already restored a listed Warehouse in Langport, as part of its award-winning development of Eco-homes on the site there.
