On 11 September 2006 the Master of the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London, Stephen Brooker accompanied by Mrs Brooker, visited the two Merseyside manufacturing sites of British Glove Association member, Bennett Safetywear Ltd to present Certificates of Merit for Long Service.
Eleven members of staff, with a combined total service of 325 years, received awards. Special congratulations are due to Pat Glyn and Pat Lee both of whom have completed 40 years' service at their St Helens' site. After the presentations the Master and Mrs Brooker were given a conducted tour of both sites, including a demonstration at St Helens of how leather is still traditionally "table cut".
The Worshipful Company of Glovers is one of the ancient livery companies of the City of London with medieval origins and historical responsibility for the control of the glove trade. It received its royal charter from Charles I in 1638. Although in more recent years its activities have involved the support of City-based charities and those associated with gloves, the Company continues to maintain strong links with the glove trade.
