A recent change in MoD procurement policy has resulted in a move away from placing orders with individual, specialist UK glove manufacturers to issuing a European tender for the Supply of Gloves” encompassing over 50 different types of protective gloves, competed for, for the first time, by electronic reverse auction.
In recognition of the impracticability of sourcing such a diverse range of products, all manufactured to strict performance specifications, to a single supplier, the requirement was subsequently broken down into 4 distinct lots. In the event the contract, finally awarded in November 2008, was shared between three UK companies, including BGA members BM Polyco Ltd and Southcombe Bros. Ltd, and one Spanish company who won the chemical glove business. Bennett Safetywear, a former direct supplier to the MoD, will continue to supply its products but as a sub-contractor to BM Polyco and Southcombe.
The impact of the changes has yet to be fully understood but there is relief for the present that many of the UKs producers will continue to share in MoD contracts and support the UK's armed forces.
